(March 9, 2024) Fans of Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly have deep and abiding connection to the music made by this iconic band. For years, that connection extended from hearing the songs on the radio, seeing the band perform live, buying albums that featured the amazing cover art, as well as scores of memorable songs. Then, there is the role of the band’s music adding to the soundtracks of our lives as their music is played at countless holiday gatherings, family reunions, weddings, and summertime cookouts.

That will continue as long as people appreciate sweet, silky soul music. Fans won’t be able to see Beverly and his trademark white outfits on the stage after his farewell tour ends this year. However, The Music Forever, or TMF, a band consisting of founding member Roame Lowry and five other Maze alums who performed with the band over the past 20 years, continues by adding recent music to that legacy.

TMF’s latest contribution is an upbeat love song that has all the positivity and energy that Maze always brought to their music, while managing to have a distinct sound. That song, “Let Me Love You,” is led by Chris Walker. Although TMF band members are rightly proud of their time with Maze, this is not a legacy band. Walker’s tenor is as warm and inviting as Beverly’s gravely vocal, but it is a 180-degree turn.

Walker has a different vibe and energy and a voice that soars. He dives into the bouncy and percussive funk of “Let Me Love You,” a song that features tight horns, a thumping bass line and slick throwback to the eighty’s keyboards, gliding through and around the arrangement to let the feelings that he has for his woman show. His sole objective is to serenade her until she lets her guard down and allows him to treat her like the queen he knows her to be. Walker and the comrades in TMF succeed. You might say they brought some raw soul to the game. Check out TMF’s “Let Me Love You” here.

By common consent one of the best UK sourced soul albums of recent years has been DOWN TO EARTH’S ‘Still Riding High’. The 2021 LP seemed to take everyone by surprise – surprise at the soulful quality that vocalist Laurence ”Lol” Thomas Williams and guitarist Stevie Paul delivered. We learned that though the Down To Earth brand was relatively new, the genial East Enders have quite a track record between them. They were previously in a group called The Unforgettables and they’ve supported likes of Mike and The Mechanics, Incognito, Rick Wakeman, Mary J Blige and classical percussionist Evelyn Glenny. Session wise they’ve worked with people like Bobby Brown, Blackstreet, Peter Andre and Booker T. So maybe not so surprising that they delivered real quality.
